Learn to Research

The basics of library research.

Choosing where to search

For most types of information, you will have to search a library database.

A library database is an online collection of information you can search to find scholarly articles, news articles, book chapters, dissertations, biographies, music, videos, and much more, depending on the database you choose. It is organized to help you (the user) search and filter results in various ways to get exactly what you need.

The University Library has a bunch of databases, so how do you know where to go?

Start with the A-Z Database List.

Tip: Where you search depends on the type of source you need and/or what subject you're searching for. If you're still not sure where to go, try a general database like Academic Search Complete.

Connecting your keywords

Once you have your keywords identified, you'll need to connect them properly in order to search a library database effectively.

Boolean operators AND and OR are two main ways to connect your keywords.
