Google Advanced Search

Google's Advanced Search options give you a lot more control over what your retrieve:  https://www.google.com/advanced_search
Among the most useful:

  • this exact word or phrase
  • language
  • site or domain  (especially.edu for academic websites)
  • usage rights
  • Compare Google's cache with the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine

Google Tools

As you view the results of a Google search, you can use the "Tools" option (near the top of the page) to control your results by date of posting.

Google Alerts

If you want to be notified daily via e-mail of new online references to a particular topic, you can use the Google Alerts option:  https://www.google.com/alerts

(Google account needed.)

Google Scholar

Google Scholar "helps you find relevant work across the world of scholarly research":  https://scholar.google.com/
Please note that the results of searches: (1) include materials not accessible in full-text form; (2) are accompanied by options to control results by posting dates.

Google Custom Searches

If you have a Google account, you can design your own search engines to search only the content of sites you designate.  The W&L library maintains a number of these tools:  http://libguides.wlu.edu/googletools
