Externship Programs

A guide to externship programs offered from W&L Law.

Overview

Fall Semester Only

Professor Keri Gould

12 credits (2 credit class and 10 field placement credits)

Capped at 12 students per semester.


Students selected for the Working in Law Full-Time (WILF) Semester Externship will work with Professor Gould to find and apply to full-time legal placements (law offices, public interest, or public service organizations and/or agencies or judicial chambers) that meet the goals and interests of the extern.

Placements may be in any jurisdiction. It is expected that most students will be working outside of the Lexington area. The course includes possible externship placements with the Delaware Court of Chancery.

Students interested in the WILF program must apply in the spring of their second year to participate in the extended credit 3L Fall externship).

Students must complete 425 hours of placement related work.


Application

Requirements:

  1. Resume
  2. A brief statement, 250 words or less, as to your externship educational goals and the type of lawyering/location or specific legal placements in which you are interested in externing.

Students must receive approval from Professor Gould before accepting a placement offer. Make sure to state in your application if you have already met with Professor Gould, discussed your target placements, and if you have accepted an approved placement.

A student enrolled in this course may not simultaneously participate in another clinical program.
