"Web archiving is the process of gathering up data that has been recorded on the World Wide Web, storing it, ensuring the data is preserved in an archive, and making the collected data available for future research."
-- Niu, J. (March/April 2012). "An overview of web archiving." D-Lib Magazine, Vol. 8, 3/4.
Not ready to fully jump into archiving? Here are some quick ways to preserve information you plan to cite or use again:
Try Zotero, a free citation management tool, to keep information for your own use. The browser tool allows you to capture screenshots of web pages and you can attach files to citation data.
Many universities also have institutional repositories where research (articles, data, dissertations, etc.) from that institution can be posted. The University Library Digital Archive serves to preserve, share, and enhance the use of materials owned or created by WLU & members of its community by making these materials available in a digital format.
Many resources and descriptions taken from Tufts University Libraries' Archived Data guide (Feb 5, 2025).
